For many of our Associates, helping to build a playground at locations where they played as a child, or where their children play, adds extra meaning to the event. Jasmine Hallums, Sales Manager at our Charlotte, N.C., location, cherished the opportunity to help at the David Hellams Community Center in Greenville, South Carolina. She had played at the community center as a child and being able to return and build a playground for the community where her family still lives, was heartwarming for her. In fact, Jasmine and her father were able to watch the ribbon cutting ceremony together while sharing childhood stories of her time spent at the center.
Many Richmond area Associates, including Debbie Edwards, Laura Dostich, Carl Johnston and Mike Carter were quick to share that their most memorable build was the first “official” KaBOOM! build held in during a tropical storm. They remembered the pouring rain and wind which made it hard to plant trees and pour concrete since any holes dug in the ground were quickly filled with water. However, as Carl shared, everyone had fun and sang songs all day long.
Buyer Kirsten Braun from our Nashville, Tenn., location, shared that the night before her first KaBOOM! build in St. Louis, the Kansas City Royals were in the Wild Card game to go to the World Series. Being a Royals fan, she watched all 12 innings of the intense game into the wee hours of the morning. Since St. Louis was a four-hour drive away, she didn’t get much sleep that night. However, she did have a great day at the build and looks forward to participating in more KaBOOM! events in the future.
For Tulsa, Okla., Location General Manager Zach Leonard, seeing a community, parents and CarMax Associates from four stores come together for a build in South Austin was a phenomenal experience. As the Project Manager of the build, he found the whole process fun and rewarding and believes that with our focus on military families, KaBOOM! is the perfect match for CarMax.
Finally, for Brian Logan, Operations Manager at our Des Moines, Iowa, store, participating in the Minneapolis KaBOOM! build turned into a family event. When the date for the build was announced, it turned out that it fell on his 15th wedding anniversary. Worried that he might meet some resistance from his wife because Minneapolis was four hours from Des Moines, he was delighted to discover that his wife, Mollie, wanted to participate in the build. Brian was thrilled that he and Mollie shared an anniversary they will never forget.
