From Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria to wildfires ravaging California, the American Red Cross has had a busy year responding to disasters from coast to coast. One of the items that the Red Cross distributes to residents in disaster-impacted areas is “comfort kits.” These comfort kits provide individuals who may be residing in Red Cross shelters or temporary housing with personal hygiene items left behind when evacuating.
The Red Cross contacted CarMax, as a national disaster responder partner, for help in replenishing their supply of comfort kits, which had been depleted from intense disaster relief efforts. Partners of the Red Cross were asked for their help in building 100,000 comfort kits for the Red Cross Disaster Field Supply Center warehouses.
CarMax Auto Finance responded by holding a volunteer team-builder to assemble 2,000 comfort kits. Working together, almost 30 CAF associates completed all the kits in an assembly line manner in just under two hours! This is one of several similar events CarMax associates have participated in to help support communities recovering from disasters.
